The Leicester goalkeeper has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford during the transfer window and could be set to follow in the footsteps of his father Peter, who became a legend between the sticks at United during the 1990s.

Former Manchester City team-mate Mikkel Bischoff has suggested that the Danish shot-stopper is “desperate” to go to the Red Devils.

David de Gea’s place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has come under scrutiny after a series of errors and Bischoff suggests that Schmeichel would jump at the chance to represent Manchester United between the sticks.

The former Manchester City defender, who played at the Etihad between 2001 and 2006, told Ekstra Bladet:

“United will certainly not be deterred by his [Schmeichel’s] age of 33 years. The most successful goalkeepers at the club in recent years have been well into their thirties. He can easily play three or four good years there.

“Schmeichel is a huge United fan. He always has been and always will be, it will be the biggest dream come true if he were to succeed [in joining United].

“If Kasper gets the opportunity to play just ten games for United, then he jumps. It’s simply so big for him. He is such a big fan that he will do anything to get to that club.”
