Pearson was axed by the Hornets on Sunday (19.07.20) after defeat to West Ham left them in danger of relegation from the Premier League and he’s thanked well-wishers for their support following his dismissal.

He tweeted:

“Although not able to finish the task I was brought in to achieve, I wish Watford all the best.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the well wishes I’ve received from Watford supporters and the football community. Thank you all for your kind messages.”

The sacking came as something of a surprise as Pearson has guided Watford from the bottom of the table to the brink of survival and reports have suggested that he and Watford owner Gino Pozzo had a “frank exchange of views” after the loss to West Ham.

Hayden Mullins will take temporary charge of the team for the final two matches of the season, but the Hornets are now searching for a 13th manager in the past nine years.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp was unsurprised by the sacking given Watford’s reputation.

He said:

“I think it’s a lack of faith [for Watford] in managers full stop. It’s their fourth manager this year, and that suggests they’ve never been happy.

“They are a club that decide to sack managers. I’d like to say I’m surprised but I’m not. That’s how they do it. With two games to go it’s an incredible decision.

“Maybe the result and the performance against West Ham – alarm bells were ringing, maybe players were talking, they’re not happy as well, so they’ve decided to do something.

“Watford do it like that, they’ve always sacked managers and are quite comfortable doing it.”
