Eredivisie Likely To Be Cancelled

The Dutch Football Association “intends not to continue” with the Eredivisie season.

The national government has extended its ban on major events until September 1 due to the coronavirus pandemic, and as such KNVB – Dutch football’s governing body – will consult Uefa before making a final decision on the current campaign.

In a statement, the organisation said:

“Based on the government’s decision, the KNVB will consult with Uefa, after which the decision will be taken.

“The KNVB has not yet definitively cancelled competitions because of financial difficulties in the football industry due to the corona crisis.”

Clubs – including leaders Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, who are level on points with Ajax ahead on goal difference – will meet on Friday (24.04.20) to talk about “the consequences” of this decision.

It’s thought that training grounds will reopen “under strict conditions” to allow players to train.

Meanwhile, Dutch football journalist Marcel Van Der Kraan told BBC World Service:

“The Eredivisie was hoping they could resume. But we know it is impossible to organise matches with fans and the Prime Minister says it is not wise to do it without fans.”
